In some localities, aluminum license plates can be added to your curbside recycling bin. Before recycling a license plate, cut it in half or remove one of the corners using tin snips or by bending the metal back and forth until it breaks. Also deface, destroy or remove the month and year stickers to prevent theft or fraud.
Earth 911 has resources for recycling license plates as scrap metal. On the home page of their website under Find recycling centers for, enter scrap metal and then type your city of zip code to find the nearest location.
Vintage license plates are collected and desired by people interested in old automobiles. Collector’s Weekly has links to several good websites for information about the collecting of old license plates. That old porcelain plate hanging in the barn could be worth hundreds of dollars!
